Bill and Merle Christie Plaque Unvelling – 6 November 2021

On 6 November, a ceremony was held at Christ Church Cathedral in Stanley honour the memory of Bill and Merle Christie.  It was through their significant contribution both before and after the 1982 conflict that the Falkland Islands Association was formed and continues to this day to support the right of the Falkland Islanders to decide their own future.

The ceremony included an address by former Legislative Assembly Member and present Chair of the Falkland Islands Chamber of Commerce, Mr Mike Summers OBE.  A commemorative plaque dedicated to the Christies was unveiled by Mr Michael (Tex) Alazia who formed a firm friendship and a working relationship with Bill and Merle in 1982.

After the ceremony at Christ Church, many of those attending visited the Christie Community Library which is located within the new Falkland College Building.  There Mr Alazia also unveiled a photograph of Bill and Merle Christie in the entrance foyer of the Library.
