Battle Day Ceremony 2015

Falklands' Battle Day Commemorated in London

Battle Day was commemorated in the traditional manner at the Cenotaph in central London on Saturday 5th December. The traffic was stopped in Whitehall, and the service was conducted by former Rector of Christchurch Cathedral in Stanley, the Rev. Dr. Richard Hines.

Wreaths were laid by Air Commodore Russell la Forte, CBE, for Britain’s Armed Forces; by Mr. Andrew Rosindell, MP, for the Falkland Islands All-Party Parliamentary Group; by the Hon Roger Edwards, MLA, for the Falkland Islands Government; by Chairman Alan Huckle for the Falkland Islands Association (FIA); by Chairman Gordon Mather, MM, for the South Atlantic Medal Association (SAMA-82); by Islander Mr. Daniel Biggs for the Falkland Islands Defence Force; by Mr. Colin Villiers for the HMS Protector Association; by Mr. Colin Stevens for the Men of Kent and Kentish Men; and by several young Islanders.

The Colour Guard was provided by Pangbourne Naval College and by the Royal Navy, and marshalled by Colonel Michael Bowles a veteran of 1982 and former Chairman of SAMA-82. Two Royal Marine buglers sounded the Last Post, and flags were lowered for the two minutes silence.

Although Battle Day commemorates the Battle of the Falklands on the 8th December 1914 when a German fleet was defeated by the Royal Navy, it is also a moment to remember those who fell liberating the Falklands following Argentina’s invasion in 1982.

With the ceremony over, the Colour Guard was inspected by Air Commodore Russell la Forte, and everyone proceeded on to the AGM of the Falkland Islands Association.
