The annual reception for friends of the Falkland Islands hosted by the Falkland Islands Government's representative in London, Ms. Sukey Cameron MBE, was held in the Great Hall of Lincoln's Inn on 16 June 2015.
Over 250 guests attended, including Members of Parliament, three previous Governors, senior representatives of the Armed Forces, officials from the FCO and other Whitehall Departments, plus of course Falkland Islanders, friends of the Falkland Islands and members of the Falkland Island Association.
The Hon Jan Cheek MLA, visiting Legislative Assembly Member of the Falkland Islands government, addressed the guests. FCO Minister, the Rt. Hon. Hugo Swire MP, was roundly applauded for his strong message of support for the Islanders' right to self-determination.
The Chairman of the FIA, Mr Alan Huckle, read the Association's loyal greetings to Her Majesty the Queen and her gracious response and proposed the toast to the Queen. The MOD Minister for Defence Personnel and Veterans, Mr Mark Lancaster MP, took the salute following the sunset ceremony played on the lawn by the band of the band of the Irish Guards.
These receptions are normally held on a weekday close to 14 June, the anniversary of the liberation of the Falkland Islands by British armed forces from the illegal Argentine occupation of the Islands in 1982. But the first such reception was held in 1974 as a means of generating support for the Islanders' cause at a time when the then British Government seemed less certain in their defence.
The Association welcomes new members who support the continuing freedom of the people of Falkland Islands. Just click the tab below to learn about the different levels of membership that are available in the UK and overseas.
